OPINIONS: Women’s Day and strip clubs, by the Protestor

Here's an opinion sent in by The Protestor.

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day (IWD) and I'd like to take a moment to reflect on this with you. If I’m not mistaken this commemoration began as a day to remember the sacrifices made by many women protesting against the terrible conditions they were forced to work in.

Here in Italy, many women celebrate IWD by frequenting strip clubs or by going out with some female friends just to have fun. I’ve never understood why and how IWD became a day to simply have fun. Can someone help me understand this strange phenomenon? Who knows if it's the same in other countries across the globe?

As a teenager I used to go out with my classmates to the center of Palermo during the morning and then eat out in a Chinese restaurant. Try to find any sense in that. And yet it was a tradition for us and I used to enjoy it a lot.

I’ve never been attracted to striptease shows. And as I’m not a good dancer I won't go to night clubs either.… I think the only way you could get me dancing is if I was totally drunk.… I’m not a very shy person, sometimes I can be quite shameless, but one of the few things I'm ashamed of doing in public is dancing.

As always, I don’t think I’ll be doing anything special this IWD. However, I'm very curious to know about all of you. Are you doing anything interesting to celebrate March 8? Have you ever been in strip joint to celebrate IWD?

Hello!
This is a very funny post! it's not funny for the IWD but for the strip! The celebration that women made during this day there is to speak a lot! I'm in accord with you when you say that it's strange that women go to a strip to celebrate this event... Not only it's strange but is terrible! I'm thinking now to the celebration of the grandparents! what's do the grandfather? I don't want to think about... :-)
So you have seen that I'm not able to give you an answer to your question. I hope that some woman give us the answer... or probably they do this because they follow the fashion like to buy a Louis Vitton bag! :-) Happy celebration to all the women in the world...

Hi Protestor,

I won't tell you what you should do, but I think you should have fun without worring too much about what happens around you - of course, let exclude the most dangerous excesses if you want!
I guess you're teenager, and this brings you many benefits: the first one, you don’t have to be too serious!
IWD is a day like any other: there isn’t any need to fix a day to remember women: everybody must to do it every day, because women are wonderful beings!
It’s correct that women get drunk and have fun at strip-tease shows as men do. Men like to see women drunk having fun - so goes the world for thousands of years!
I remain at home with my pregnant wife and my daughter: I've already used my PASSPORT for fun – guys, it’s your turn!

Hello!
I don’t like this celebration as for Valentine’s Day or Grandfather’s Day, etc.
Because nowadays this celebrations are only for business and not for a serious reason.
If this celebration is a day to remember the sacrifices made by many women protesting against the terrible conditions they were forced to work in and for protesting about a women’s situation in Italy in this moment it would be ok. It’s correct to celebrate this days with a demonstration or other events, but if this is a situation only to go to strip club or restaurant, well it is vain for me, because there are 364 days in the year to go to restaurant with friends!
This is the reason why I’m not celebrating today.
This evening I will stay with my family as the other days!

@Walter
Hello!
Maybe I wasn't clear... I don't think it's wrong to celebrate the IWD having fun (even if like Tiziana I can do it every day), I'm just wondering how a day began to remember something so sad became a day to have fun… don’t you think it’s a contraddiction?

Perhaps it depend to the fact that one way to remember a sad day change on having fun, and then it becomes a commercial show...
I'm not an expert but adverse dates are celebrated with food and songs in many religions and beliefs.
Many other dates, are celebrated with joy and waste bringing different values by real meaning. Do you agree?

8 MARCH, for me every day is the IWD.
I was educated by a wonderful women, my mother.
That with her ability love, with unbeatable sensitivity, everyday she teachs me how to live my life.I have learned from her all things simple and beautiful . I am very dissapointed that many women celebrate the IWD to see the male strippers, I've never been to these places and I'm not interested

I agree with you, but I'm not very religious so I've never thought a lot about religious events

Hi,
i don't know how and when the IWD has became a day to have fun but i think that today this celebration is very sad. When i see groups of women who choose, for that day, to have fun into a stip tease club i'm ashamed to be a woman. I don't demonize this kind of shows (they could be interesting :-) )but women who choose this particular day to go there demean themselves.

Hi Max,

you're unlucky!

"On 2nd August, there’s the celebration of men in many areas of the Alps. Unreliable sources give the date as inheritance of Napoleon’s Age, in reference to the soldiers who wore skintight leggings and hence the ironic wisdom had made a " Liasion to the “2” of August. Could be true?

Ok Max, let us know something interesting!

The women are complicated planets. The need to go out and trasgress for a day is important for many women that spend every days taking care to their families. For a day the women want shining like stars and they prove to forget the daily problems.
After midnight, like Cinderella, they come back home ready to live their life waiting for the next 8 March.

Hello
Last Tuesday I haven't done anything to celebrate IWD, but in the past, I happened to go out to eat with my friends. I recognize that the 'March 8 has now become just one day to be together and have fun and not the day to celebrate the real reason why the party has been established. Therefore it would be nice on this day to participate in events / exhibitions dedicated to women who have protested in the past.. and then, why not, spend the evening together to their friends (without going to the strip club:P)
Bye Bye.

I have always celebrated this day because it's my birthday. In any case I don't like Women's Day because I think that there is nothing to celebrate.
Bye :)
